The four primary types of forging are open-die forging, closed-die (impression-die) forging, seamless rolled ring forging, and cold forging. Open-die uses flat dies for large shapes; closed-die uses shaped cavities for precision parts; ring rolling forms hollow cylindrical components; and cold forging shapes metal at room temperature for tight tolerances and superior surface finish.

Forged steel is generally stronger than cast steel. The forging process aligns the metal's grain structure along the part's geometry, eliminating internal voids, porosity, and inclusions common in casting. This results in superior tensile strength, fatigue resistance, and impact toughness — making forged steel sleeves the preferred choice for high-stress automotive, oil & gas, and industrial applications.

The three principal forging methods are hot forging (metal heated above recrystallization temperature for easy shaping), warm forging (metal heated to an intermediate temperature for a balance of formability and tight tolerances), and cold forging (metal worked at room temperature for excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy).
