Forged Carbon Steel Flanges — Types & Specifications

Forged flanges are used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and equipment in pressurized piping systems. They are widely applied in oil & gas pipelines, chemical processing plants, water and plumbing infrastructure, automotive fluid systems, and industrial equipment where leak-proof, high-strength joints are essential for safe and efficient operation.

Forged carbon steel is a wrought metal alloy primarily composed of iron and carbon (typically 0.05%–2.0% carbon) that has been shaped through forging — applying compressive force via dies or presses. The forging process produces a denser, stronger material with a refined grain flow that follows the component's geometry, resulting in superior mechanical properties over cast equivalents.

Forged flanges are manufactured by shaping heated or cold metal under pressure, yielding a continuous grain structure, higher strength, and better pressure resistance. Plate flanges (also called slip-on or flat-face flanges cut from plate stock) are machined from rolled steel plate, which may contain internal laminations and generally offers lower mechanical strength, making them less suitable for high-pressure applications.

Hot forging is used for complex geometries and larger flanges requiring significant material deformation, while cold forging delivers tighter dimensional tolerances and improved surface finish for smaller, precision components. Secondary processes including CNC machining, heat treating, and surface finishing are also available.
